Implementing and Enhancing a Safety Engagement System

in a Production Environment

Overview

I designed and implemented a gamified safety engagement tool (Safety Lotería) to reinforce safety awareness and encourage daily participation in a production environment.

This solution supported an existing safety program by providing a simple, interactive way to integrate learning into daily workflows. The design applied instructional design principles to reinforce behavior through repetition, accessibility, and real-world usability.

The Problem

While structured safety programs were in place, maintaining consistent engagement and reinforcement of safe behaviors can be challenging in fast-paced production environments.

This is particularly important for new hires, who must quickly adapt to unfamiliar processes, equipment, and safety expectations. Without consistent, accessible reinforcement, it can be difficult to build early awareness and confidence.

There was an opportunity to introduce a simple, interactive approach to support ongoing learning and participation.

The Goal

  • Reinforce safe behaviors through consistent, daily interaction

  • Support new hires in building early awareness and confidence in the production environment

  • Increase engagement with safety initiatives across all experience levels

  • Design a system that is simple, accessible, and easy to follow

Design Approach

The solution was intentionally designed to be simple, accessible, and immediately usable within a fast-paced production environment.

Rather than relying on complex training formats, the focus was on reinforcing learning through repetition and consistent exposure.

Key design decisions included:

  • Using clear, recognizable visuals to support quick understanding in a fast-paced environment.

  • Keeping rules simple and intuitive to reduce barriers to participation

  • Prioritizing usability and accessibility over complexity to ensure consistent engagement

  • Delivering content in both English and Spanish to support a diverse workforce
